Week 5 - How to Reinstall Windows 11 on Your PC
Before You Begin
- Backup Your Data: Reinstalling Windows can erase your files, so always back up important data. Use an external hard drive, cloud storage, or both to ensure everything important is saved.
- Have a Microsoft Account Ready: Remember your login credentials if you use a Microsoft account. If you use a local account, jot down your password.
- Obtain Windows 11 Installation Media: USB or DVD. If you don't have one, you can create it using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.
Step 1: Creating Windows 11 Installation Media
If you don't have the installation media ready, here's how to create it:
- Go to the official Windows 11 download page.
- Under the Create Windows 11 Installation Media section, click on Download Now.
- After the Download is complete, run the tool.
- Choose Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) and hit Next.
- Select your preferred language, edition, and architecture, then click Next.
- Choose a USB flash drive (to create a bootable USB) or an ISO file (to burn a DVD) and follow the instructions to complete the process.
Step 2: Setting Up for Reinstallation
- Insert Your Installation Media: If you created a USB drive, plug it into your PC or insert a DVD into your optical drive.
- Access BIOS: Restart your computer and enter the BIOS settings. This usually requires pressing a key (like F2, Del, or Esc) immediately after powering on. Check your PC's manual if unsure.
- Modify Boot Order: Find the boot order settings in the BIOS. Ensure the USB or DVD drive is the primary boot device. Save changes and exit the BIOS settings.
Step 3: Installing Windows 11
- Boot from Installation Media: Your PC should start from the installation media. If it doesn't, double-check BIOS settings.
- Select Language Settings: You'll see options for language, time, and keyboard preferences. Choose your settings and click Next.
- Start the Installation: Click the Install Now button on the setup screen.
- Enter Activation Key: If you have a product key, input it. If your PC has Windows pre-installed, you can select I don't have a product key. Windows will typically activate automatically once you connect to the internet.
- Choose Installation Type: You'll be prompted to pick between:
- Upgrade: Keeps your files and settings (not recommended for a complete reinstall).
- Custom: Install Windows only (advanced): This option allows for a clean installation.
- Select Drive for Installation: Choose the drive where you want to install Windows. Caution: Deleting drives will erase all data, so ensure you've backed everything up!
- Begin Installation: After selecting your drive, click Next. The installation process will start. Your PC will restart several times during this phase.
Step 4: Configuring Your New Windows 11 Setup
- Follow Setup Prompts: After installation, you will be prompted to configure your Windows settings. You'll set your language, connect to a network, etc.
- Sign In with Your Account: Sign in with Microsoft or create a new account.
- Privacy Settings: Customise options to your preference.
- Complete Setup: prompts will help you finish setting up Windows.
Step 5: Post-Installation: Drivers and Applications
- Update Windows: Navigate to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. This installs drivers and system updates.
- Install Applications: install any software you need in the web browser, office, or other applications.
- Restore Your Files: Copy your backed-up files to your PC.
Conclusion
Reinstalling Windows 11 can refresh your system and resolve issues, provided you follow the steps carefully. By preparing properly and taking your time during the reinstallation process, you can enjoy a smooth and efficient experience.
